Baptism in Water
We have had the wonderful privilege of baptizing many newly saved Christians as well as people rededicating their live to the Lord since the beginning of THE BRiDGE ORLANDO church launch in January 2006.
These heart touching services are a very special time with our church family as they obey the command from the Lord to be baptized.
What does THE BRiDGE ORLANDO believe in regard to baptism?
The BRiDGE ORLANDO holds the following beliefs as stated in What we Believe? (link back to that page)
On Water Baptism
We believe that water baptism should be by immersion and consummated immediately after committing to the Lordship of Jesus and His atoning sacrifice for our sin. This ordinance is a personal and public statement of our faith in the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ on our behalf. It is also a commitment to follow His example and lay down our lives for the sake of His Kingdom.
What is Baptism?
The word "baptism" is in Greek "baptisma" while "to baptize" is in Greek "baptize". In Greek "baptize" means "to immerse, cause to be dipped, to submerge, to overwhelm". To baptize something in water means to put it under the water. Therefore in the Biblical sense, to baptize a person in water literally means to put that person wholly under the water. To be water baptized was a sign of adherence to the teachings of the respective teacher.
Why be Baptized?
In obedience to the Lords commands in scripture:
"Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of the Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost." (Acts 2:38).
The practice of water baptism appears in the Bible first with the appearance of John the Baptist. "John came baptizing in the wilderness and preaching a baptism for the remission of sins. And all the land of Judea, and those from Jerusalem, went out to him and were all baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins." (Mark 1:4, 5)
What does Baptism Symbolize?
It is a symbol of dying to the old sinful nature and raising up with Christ in newness of life.
"Therefore we were buried with him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life." (Romans 6:4).
Water baptism for the Christian symbolizes and appropriates our death, burial and resurrection with Christ.
It means identification with Christ.
